#23 "In Summary" 09/02/2007

My journey thru Library 2.0 has been an interesting and at times frustrating one. While going thru some of the 23 things, I kept thinking "I'll never use this again." Or "this doesn't even interest me." HOWEVER, in sending greeting cards this a.m. in 123greetings.com, I discovered a link to add it to my del.ic.ious account and also to my RSS feeds! While adding it to my RSS feeds, I discovered a podcast in the TV SERIES FINALE/CANCELLED SHOWS feed on Gilligan's Island! Really enjoyed it. It was a long 26 minute podcast, but while listening to it, I started to compose this for #23! I am seeing links to add to RSS, del.ic.ious or other sites on things now that I would never have noticed before!!!! So, maybe I will use some of the 23 items again after all!

I also really enjoyed #10 the image generators. I spent hours playing in that one. I also really enjoyed #19 the Web awards list. My two favorites so far in this one are Picasa and Google Maps.

Zoho will also be revisited. You can go to word or spreadsheet via the internet/zoho and start your project, and then go to ANY other computer with Internet access and continue working on it! This way, you wouldn't have to worry about not having the same version of word or excel when going from computer to computer. Would benefit some of our patrons that run into problems because of different versions of programs.

Some sites would be great if you are doing a lots of research on a subject because you could link all the sites in the same place. Also might come in handy for librarians that want to keep a list of reference points for popular topics. SJCPL subject guides in Wikiland or del.ic.ious would both be good for that.

All in all, it was a very interesting adventure going thru the 23 things.

#27 Photobucket 9-16-2007

I went into photobucket and played for a long time. What fun!
I made two albums. One with some of my pictures and one with
some pictures I found under "find stuff". I made a slideshow
of the second album. I have included it on my blog.

#32 Omnidrive and shipshot

Well, I am not sure how, but I did manage to download a document to Zoho writer and then download it to omnidrive. I am not sure I can repeat it quickly. Accidently stumbled on the right combination of steps. Will try again later.

I can open my document in omnidrive, but it is a multistep process. Interesting.
I don't see where I will need to use it again at this point. BUT I have proven myself wrong on that a couple of times during this 2.0 process, so you never know!

The recipe I used for this experiment is on my blog.

SNIPSHOT was fun. It is easy to download a picture from your computer and then crop, resize it etc. You can also use an html code to put a picture in this program. FUN!

#18 zoho revisited

I went back into zoho writer while trying to do #32 Omnidrive. When in zoho before, I couldn't get it to post to my blog. TODAY it worked. This is the same thing I wrote before, but this time I posted it directly from zoho to my blog!!!!

I can understand where using online office programs could come in handy.

If you use one version of a program at home, and then go somewhere else and try to

work on your project on a different version of the same program it just doesn't work.

BUT if you use the online version and save your document, you can go anywhere else that has internet and open up your document and continue working on it.  No problem!

 

So, online word and the spreadsheet programs would come in handy for this reason.

We have had patrons many times that couldn't use or computers to work on their document for this very reason.  They leave frustrated and sometimes angry.

 

The tool bars look like they have the same things on them.  Even some new ones that I don't recognize. 

 

 

#31 Plaxo

Well, I went into Plaxo and created a calendar. Not much too put on it though.
Added a couple tv shows, bd's, anniv. Added a link to my calendar on my blog. When I clicked on it however, it only took me to Plaxo where I have to sign in to retrieve my calender. SO I deleted the link.

I can see where this might be a good thing if you have lots of appointments or dates to remember in your daily life. However for me, I don't think I will find a need for it.

Tried the icalshare.com site and found that I couldn't subscribe to anything. Firefox said not linked to any program, and windows said "page can't be found".

#29 Scrapblogs

I went into scrapblogs and created a christmas decorations scrapblog.
I can see where this could be a blast if you are into scrapbooking or just want to create a special page of pictures for someone as a gift or for yourself.

I hit the button to post to my blog, but when I push the "done" button, nothing happens! So, I am going to type the link here and hope it works.

#24 File conversion issues

I tried to change a picture that isn't jpg to a jpg yesterday. Didn't have any luck.

I typed something on microsoft word today and sent it to be converterted to html.

I must be doing something wrong. It sends me a link to my email, but to me it looked the same as when I sent it. (Maybe it was already html????) Tried to send it again and change to a pdf file, but couldn't figure out how I got it to go last time. Opened it from my documents and then filled out the rest of the zamzar blocks and it kept telling me I had to choose at least one file. I thought I had. Will try again at a later date.

I can see where this would come in handy for some of our patrons that use different versions of programs and then try to use our computers at the library and can't open it up off their floppy disc. Using this program they could change it to a different format that would work with our program. Or change it to a different program format like publisher for a presentation.

If they know how, or can figure out how, to use the zamzar program that is.

#25 Newsletters

I created a nifty little newsletter about the upcoming chicken roast to be held in Berlin Center on Sept 22. It looked GREAT!

BUT, I found that the only way it would show up on my blog was if I am logged into their site! As soon as I sign out, all that appears on my blog is the page that you create a newsletter on!

I even tried making it public, but that only worked while I was logged into the site too.

It is an easy site to make a little newsletter on. But I give up trying to link it to my blog for now. Had fun trying though!

I added a weather widget to the right column of my blog page.
I also added a clock widget!

These are fun!
Now to watch my blog and see if they keep changing!

#22 e books

I opened a Net Library account and then went in to check out the two sites listed.

With the Net Library site, I kept hitting stone walls. Couldn't find anything on subjects I tried to find, nor did I find anything on authors I liked. Doing something wrong, but what?????

With Digital Library, I found things I recognized and that were of interest to me. Much better.
Will need to download Overdrive or another software in order to be able to download a book to try it. Might already have the Adobe Ebook downloaded already. Will check.

I will try again after talking to my ebook expert at work.

I prefer to hold my book in my hand verses listening to a book.

After much searching, I am finally finding a couple of interest.

#20 YouTube

Ok, I posted a couple of videos from YouTube. You could lose yourself for hours in this site. There are videos on anything you can think of. Just type in a subject, and there are all kinds of videos on it. Some good, lots bad.

Try typing in commercials for a decade (70"s commercials for instance) and see how far we have come in the technology for making commercials.

I chose the two I did because I really like the I Love Lucy show, and this is one of my favorites. I also liked the card trick one because he managed to use up the whole deck of cards while telling a story.

See the videos at the top of my blog. Would love to have them UNDER my blog, but.................

#19 Discovering Web 2.0 tools

Oh what fun this one is! Check out ONE site!!! You have to be kidding!. I will be going back and check out more of them.

Some of the sites I checked out today are: PICASA This is a program where you can do all kinds of things with your photos on your computer. This one makes my fingers itch to play with it. GOOD SIGN! I actually like it better than FLIKR. GOOGLE MAPS: This one is great too. Worth checking out. You can do things with this one I haven't seen on MAPQUEST. Like it will show you pictures of places along your route, gas prices, and real estate search among others. ARCAPLAY in games looks like fun. Has all different types of games. Could get lost in here. HEALTH--MEDSTORY is an easy to navigate site that you can look up health related issues and find answers.

THIS IS A FUN EXERCISE. I will revisit this one at a later date. I have only just begun to explore!

#18 Zoho

I revisited zoho writer on 10-6-07 What I originally wrote here, is now on that post. I managed to get it to post directly from zoho writer to my blog this time so I edited this post.

This was written on Zoho Writer. I am going to check out a couple others next. Couldn't figure out how to send it from zoho to my blog. Used cut and paste.

I checked out sheet, email, creator, and a couple others. I can see where it could be useful. The sheet program is just like excel. Easy to use.

Still can't send from one program to the other.

#17 PBWiki

Ok, I set up my Wiki page. Put a recipe and a calendar on it.
Also played on the PBWiki homepage and made a couple of edits.
Checked out the favorites list and checked on a several of them.
This isn't too hard. Just go back and watch the little video clips if you run
into problems.
